UC Berkeley’s Unit 3 seismic retrofit comprises four high-rise residential halls surrounding a large courtyard and a central commons building that houses the dining center, main office, recreation lounge, and the Academic Services Center. This project entailed improving the buildings’ seismic safety rating from “Poor” to “Good” for the population of students who spend the most time in University-owned buildings.
The design-and-construction team accommodated the aggressive schedule that manifested the University’s urgent concerns about the safety of the student residents. This meant undertaking the design concurrently with review, approval and construction.
